As the school year kicks off, I'm packing my kids' bags with budget-friendly, nutritious snacks that are simple to eat on the go. Drawing from years of parenting experience, here's how I keep them healthy without breaking the bank.
Say goodbye to pricey, processed snacks loaded with sugar and fats—their non-recyclable packaging harms the environment too. I keep just a few on hand for emergencies now.
The Timeless Sandwich
It's been a reliable choice for generations!
To save time and money without cooking, grab an extra baguette from the bakery in the evening.
I pick one that's not too crusty, slice it open, and fill it with a quality dark or milk chocolate bar. Wrap it in the bakery's paper bag—ready to go!
If any bread is left over, I never toss it. Cathy shares great tips for using stale bread here.
To keep things exciting, my kids pick from bread varieties like white, wholemeal, seeded, or nutty options.
When I have a spare moment, I make homemade treats. Unwrapping them shows my kids I was thinking of them with care.

I stick to quick, inexpensive recipes like yogurt cake, oatmeal cookies (check out mine in the photo above), shortbread, or chocolate cake. I let my kids choose their favorite and get baking!
They have personalized BPA-free snack boxes with a fruit or compote added.
For drinks, schools often provide named cups for water at the start of the year.
