A rainy Sunday afternoon, storm raging outside, and we're all bored. Movie time it is: the classic Finding Nemo. Pure joy, especially Dory's hilarious whale-speak: "Waaaaalvihiiss." The boys can't stop imitating. "Cool, Mom, teach us whale language!" Way more fun than my Chinese homework. I've been taking Mandarin lessons for weeks. Our boys are half-Chinese but not raised bilingually—their dad speaks only his regional dialect, with limited standard Mandarin. Now, I want us all learning Chinese, but for the kids, it has to be fun. How?

Our kids started English in kindergarten—earlier than I did. But Chinese? It's offered in some schools, not ours. Private tutors like Princess Amalia's? Not for us. Could they join my evening adult class? It has a kids' session: English-Chinese, Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
