The Crayola Crayon pen, colors with melted wax crayons

It's in between drawing and painting, it doesn't get your fingers dirty and it dries very quickly. Rara, what is that? The Crayola Crayon pen! Last week the Crayon pen came to us and Lotte couldn't wait to get started with it. I get it, because the packaging alone looks very attractive and colorful. You want to work with that! I can already tell you that we had a lot of fun with it and that I really think it is something to put on a wish list for the holidays!

Getting started with Crayola's Crayon pen

Unfortunately, she still had to muster some patience. Because no matter how nice it is to be able to review toys… photos should also be taken to accompany the article. And taking quick, quick pictures in the evening is something I hate myself. First a night's sleep before we can start making works of art with this chalk pen.

What is the Crayola Crayon pen for one thing?

I can be pretty brief about that. The Crayon pen is a somewhat thicker casing with which you can melt crayons. This means that the pen gets warm, the chalk you put in it melts and you can then start drawing with melted chalk.

Using this chalk pen is very easy. In the box of the Crayon pen you will find the following:

  • pen yourself
  • pen holder
  • 8 wax crayons
  • the transformer
  • a label cutter
  • a manual that clearly describes how the pen works
  • 3 sheets of paper to practice

Using the Crayon pen

You simply connect the pen with the cord of the transformer and then plug it into the socket. Place the pen in the holder so that it can get warm. A red light is on, and when the Crayon pen is warm enough, the light turns green.

In the meantime, grab a crayon of the color you want to work with. Note that there is no longer a label on the crayon. The labels are not present with the supplied wax crayons, so you can use them right away, otherwise you have to remove the label. Break off a piece of the wax crayon and put it in the top of the pen so that it can melt. As soon as the light is green and the chalk has melted, you can color and draw with it.

Tip Make sure you hold the pen upright, otherwise there is a chance that the melted chalk will run out.

Drawing with the Crayola pen

Drawing with the pen is slightly different than with wax crayon or pencil. To start with, the pen is fairly 'thick' and you have to get used to how it lies in the hand. You have to hold the pen straight up. In addition, it is just a matter of scanning how much chalk you need. Our experience is that you use quite a bit of chalk when drawing. That is not bad at all, but coloring large areas with the same color is difficult if you only have one piece of chalk of that color.

What we really like about the pen here is that you draw a kind of 3D. The melted wax crayon comes out of the pen a bit thicker and you put it 'on top of' the sheet of paper. It dries pretty quickly so you can run your fingers over it in no time and you will really feel relief on your drawing. Super fun.

Keep in mind that when you run out of crayon and you put in a new piece of a different color, you always first get a kind of color mixing of those two colors. We like it, but if you don't want that, then you have to make sure that you first draw on a scrap until the color is pure again.
