Naturalis Summer Expedition Activity Book

As a parent of three children aged 3, nearly 6, and 8, I recently joined the Naturalis Summer Expedition on a school-free Friday. The striking new Naturalis museum building impresses, but the entrance hall, even without Trix the T-Rex (currently on tour), sets the stage for discovery.

After refreshing fruity drinks on the sunny terrace, our guided press tour began with a custom activity book. The 8-year-old navigated assignments independently, guiding her younger sister, while our 3-year-old thrived with support. Tailored for various ages, the route offered hands-on experiences everywhere.

Adventure in Nature

Expeditions start with a researcher readiness check: strength, senses, observation, teamwork. We tested our skills crossing a simulated Amazon—impossible alone, but achievable together. Spotting vibrant butterflies and sniffing the pungent giant arum (quite the whiff!), armed with magnifiers and jungle hats, we delved deeper.

En route, we passed captivating Wildlife Photographer of the Year images projected in a darkened space. In Borneo, we explored butterfly catching, beetles, and carnivorous plants. Submerging in a submarine, we learned underwater communication and identified new sponge species. The Amazon hosts 50% of Earth's animal and plant species—a biodiversity hotspot!

On a Ditch Safari in the Netherlands

Local wonders abound too. Our final challenge: a ditch safari. Far from virtual, expedition leader Piet provided buckets and nets, leading us to the real ditch by Naturalis' entrance—the ultimate hands-on nature discovery. With staff and parental help, we netted creatures and eggs, examining them inside using research pots, magnifiers, and species guides.

The expedition wrapped with a satisfying BBQ. Our young adventurers stayed engaged throughout. Fun, educational activities suit all ages without overwhelming—ideal for families seeking active, insightful outings.
