5 Proven Tips for a Stress-Free Long Car Trip with Your Toddler

As a parent who's tackled hotel stays with a baby—and learned the hard way that one room means early bedtimes for everyone—I'm gearing up for our next adventure: a 1,430 km drive to Croatia with our one-year-old toddler. Round trip, that's 2,860 km. I'm excited, but realistic about the challenges. Drawing from my experience and research, here are five practical tips to make it smoother for all of us.

Table of Contents

What should you pay attention to during a long car trip with small children?

  1. Stop stops
  2. Entertainment in the car
  3. Everything in pitchers
  4. At the campsite
  5. The return journey

Keep the journey relaxed—no rushing to rack up miles at the expense of everyone's comfort. Treat the drive as part of the holiday with planned stops and overnights.

1. Staying overnight during a long car trip

For such a distance, overnights are essential. We're booking two: one in Germany, one in Austria. Day one covers half the trip, leaving two easier days. Our toddler just turned one, so long drives will test her limits—and ours. Tip: Drive at night if you can alternate shifts; kids sleep through it, covering more ground effortlessly.

2. Entertainment in the car during the long car journey

We skip screens like iPads. Instead, focus on interactive fun.

Read to yourself

I'll read books in the back seat with her. One-on-one time she loves. Tip: Rotate kids if you have multiples—one upfront for scenery, the other gets focused attention.

Listen CD

Audio CDs and sing-alongs keep spirits high.

Hand puppets

For boredom busters, pack small hand puppets for impromptu shows. Let your child join in—pure joy!

3. Everything in pitchers

Pack everything needed, but ensure your car insurance covers extras. Standard policies might lack benefits like pre-holiday checks, roadside assistance, or replacement transport. Last year, friends in the Czech Republic lost a wheel—replacement transport saved their trip. Choose coverage with these for peace of mind.

4. At the campsite

We're in a mobile home at a seafront site with pools, dining, and activities. With a toddler, we'll stick to swimming in 30°C heat, beach explores, and low-key fun. Fingers crossed for some me-time with a book.

5. And then the way back

Return plans depend on outbound success. One stop might suffice, or we'll need two. Driving with kids has challenges, but safety and coziness start with prep. Check our full tips on driving with children, Marion's blog, or car ride entertainment ideas.
