7 Proven Tips for Flying with Young Children: A Mom's Real-World Experience

As a mom who's flown with a 4-month-old baby and a 1.5-year-old toddler—including a trip to Gran Canaria—I've learned that air travel with little ones is manageable with smart preparation. Our crybaby son and active daughter made it challenging, but these strategies turned potential chaos into smooth adventures. Here's what worked for us.

Practical Tips for Flying with Young Children

These hacks minimize gear and stress, getting you to your vacation faster.

1. Best Airport Transport for Families

Skip bulky strollers like Joolz or Bugaboo—they often count as extra luggage, incur fees, and get damaged. Instead, use your baby's Maxi-Cosi car seat. Most airlines let you gate-check it (like umbrella strollers) for free. It arrives right at the gate or baggage claim on a dedicated cart—perfect for young kids.

2. Renting a Car? You've Got This Covered

The Maxi-Cosi doubles as a safe infant car seat at your destination. Pair it with a compact umbrella stroller: Lay the stroller flat for your baby, clip the Maxi-Cosi upfront for your toddler. It secures perfectly without straps, creating an instant "duo" setup. We used ours as a bouncer too—versatile and genius.

3. Packing Luggage Hands-Free

We're backpack converts: hands free for babywearing, diaper changes, or pushing the stroller. One pack for essentials (passports, docs, snacks, drinks); the other for baby gear (diapers, wipes, clothes, thermos, formula, jars). Compartmentalized packs keep things accessible. I handled the stroller (baby in carrier or seat, toddler in Maxi-Cosi); hubby managed two spacious suitcases. Airports mean waits—watch planes, people-watch, but have entertainment ready.

Must-Have Items for the Flight

  • Clay
  • Empty water bottle
  • Bagged surprises

4. Small Pots of Clay

Clay is my secret weapon—a couple of mini pots in carry-on spark endless fun: shapes, dolls, even "cookies" shared with passengers. It's mess-free creativity that buys hours of peace.

5. Reusable Water Bottle

Pack an empty one to fill post-security. Add sticker sheets for custom decor—toddlers love it, and it's hydration on demand.

6. Bagged 'Emergency Kit'

Space-saving ziplocks with:

  • Stickers
  • Coloring book and crayons
  • Mini whiteboard
  • Picture book
  • Wrapped mini-gifts (raisins, keychain, ball)

Window views often entertain too. These kept us covered.

Flying with young kids opens the world—don't let it stop you. Prep smart, embrace possibilities, and create family memories. Next up: a month-long caravan trip with our two. Stay tuned!
