Unwinding in Andros, Greece: A Blissful Family Week Out of Time

As seasoned travelers, we were thrilled to finally escape to Andros, Greece, for a serene mid-July family getaway. Surprisingly, our teenagers joined us willingly—a rare treat for a sun-soaked week of pure relaxation!

This unforgettable week in Andros allowed us to truly decompress. It took a couple of days to fully unwind, but once we did, it was magical: beautiful scenery, warm sunshine, and utter peace. No shopping, no meal planning, no schedules—just following our friends who've explored the island for 30 years. Pure bliss.

Travel logistics were straightforward with preparation: negative PCR tests required, plus Greece's Passenger Locator Form (PLF) in advance. We missed one flight due to unfamiliarity but caught the next after a quick test at Athens airport. For the return, antigenic tests 48 hours prior sufficed. All smooth, especially in July before restrictions tightened.

Andros remains one of Greece's least touristy islands—a hidden gem. We encountered mostly Greek vacationers, weekenders from Athens (just a 2-hour ferry ride), and a handful of French expats. Spotting an American felt novel after 18 months of isolation.

Unlike our usual adventures, we did absolutely nothing structured: slept in, savored delicious meals, lounged on beaches, strolled to Batsi village for dinner and drinks, then wandered back. A true parenthesis from reality.

For accommodations, I highly recommend intimate family-run spots like ours: direct access to a semi-private beach, light snacks available (no full lunch/dinner service), and Batsi village just a pleasant 15-minute walk away. A tavern perfect for midday meals is only 3 minutes down the path.

Relive the magic through these photos—ideal inspiration as summer fades (written by a procrastinating travel writer, two months later).
