I resisted a clickbait title like "But wait—she's pregnant!" No, definitely no baby on the way. Instead, we're embarking on an exciting hosting journey (just for 6 weeks).
More seriously: As I mentioned briefly on Facebook (follow me there for updates), we're welcoming a 19-year-old student from Guatemala starting this evening. She's en route as I type, and the anticipation is thrilling.
She's not an au pair, but we'll serve as her host family for 6 weeks while she vacations and discovers Paris. We'll provide room, board, and laundry (the classics). In exchange, she'll teach us English and Spanish. Our kids are thrilled—especially our 5-year-old, whose Spanish lessons haven't exactly sparked joy... yet.
You might wonder: Why host? How did this happen?
It began with my pre-summer search for kids' language immersion programs (you know my passion for travel-enriching experiences). I found an association offering teen exchanges with host families. Though geared toward older teens, I reached out. Our goal? Bring the world to us since budget limits our travels, despite prioritizing family vacations. Short-term hosting fits perfectly.
Her application shone: a kind, grateful young woman eager to explore Paris, European culture, and family life. After a family meeting—our go-to for big decisions—the kids unanimously voted yes. It'll be an adjustment (sharing space isn't easy), but it'll be fun, enriching, and extraordinary.
For me, already juggling a full plate, it'll amp up the chaos (ha!), but I'm excited to shake up my routine—especially amid seasonal blues—with fresh perspectives these 6 weeks.
We'll debrief post-stay.
Logistics: Our eldest is giving up his room. We've shuffled belongings, added cozy camp bedding (inflatable mattress + custom topper from Great-Aunt) under his sister's loft. Sibling squabbles ahead? Likely. But as parents with years of real-life lessons, we're convinced it'll teach sharing, adaptability, and gratitude—skills every family needs. They'll cherish their space more afterward.
Can't wait for her arrival tonight!
