Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to spark your kids' interest in gardening. Looking for a simple way to keep them engaged indoors?
I've got just the project: a charming mini herb garden grown right in eggshells. As a kindergarten teacher, I've seen firsthand how this hands-on activity captivates young minds.
It's easy, educational, and yields fresh herbs they can harvest themselves. Here's how to create it:

- 6 empty eggshells
- 1 empty egg carton
- 1 teaspoon
- Potting soil
- Seeds of parsley, chives, mint, basil, or other herbs
1. Crack eggs high enough to create tall shell containers for your omelet or soft-boiled eggs.
2. Rinse the shells thoroughly and place them back in the egg carton.
3. Fill each shell with potting soil using a teaspoon.
4. Plant seeds in each shell and label them with a marker for easy identification.
5. Water lightly every other day and position in a bright spot. Watch them sprout!
Your mini herb garden is ready! I tested this with my kindergarten students, and they were thrilled watching the plants grow.
They proudly took them home—ideal for Mother's Day gifts—and later harvested herbs for meals. Chives and mint thrive especially well.
This project shines on rainy days when outdoor play isn't an option, teaching patience and nurturing skills.
Give it a try and share your experience in the comments. We'd love to hear how it went with your kids!
