Babysitting grandchildren brings joy to many grandparents' lives and offers an unexpected health benefit. A rigorous Australian study reveals that caring for grandkids can enhance cognitive function and lower the risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.
The research tracked 120 grandparents and found those who babysat one day a week scored higher on cognitive tests.

One day per week appears sufficient for benefits. However, moderation is key: grandparents babysitting five or more days weekly showed poorer cognitive performance.
As with most things, balance is essential.
Extensive research confirms regular social engagement supports mental sharpness in older adults. Grandparents often report greater well-being from time with grandchildren, feeling purposeful while sharing and receiving love.
