Officially Engaged After 10 Years: The Surprise Proposal I Never Saw Coming

After 10 incredible years together, it finally happened—my partner got down on one knee! I'm already daydreaming about our honeymoon, thrilled by the positive spark this engagement has ignited in our relationship. Officially engaged! Here's how I missed every single clue.

Call me naive—or blissfully oblivious. My family can vouch for it 😉. I had no idea about the elaborate preparations my partner, friends, and relatives were orchestrating. Reading back through my recent blog posts now, it all makes perfect sense—waaaaaaah! *Does a happy dance behind the laptop*.

How they kept it under wraps is a mystery, considering none of them are secret-keeping pros. That I didn't suspect a thing speaks volumes about my tunnel vision!

Officially Engaged: I Never Saw It Coming

In December 2016, my boyfriend knew for sure: 'This amazing woman is going to be my wife.' By March 29, 2017, we'd hit our 10-year anniversary. We'd already arranged for our daughter Lulu to spend the weekend with Aunt Nessa and Uncle Iejaah (Lulu's names for them). It was our first kid-free getaway since she was born—a real treat for mom and dad!

This was my year to plan our anniversary surprises, which made things tricky for him. He wanted to propose that weekend but had no clue about my itinerary. Enter his sneaky side: he enlisted my sister and sister-in-law. They casually pumped me for details—'What are you planning?' 'Sounds fun!' 'Need any help?'—and passed everything along to him.

My Plans for Our Weekend

I had it all mapped out: a cozy dinner at a Portuguese restaurant (perfect for his Angolan roots), a movie, a day exploring Amsterdam, top-notch sushi, a relaxing sauna session, and beachside breakfast. Blissful, right? Not quite his vision.

His Secret Plan for the Weekend

Ten years earlier, he'd asked me to start 'courting' on Scheveningen beach. So, he planned the proposal at a beachfront restaurant there. The Thursday before, he slyly suggested, 'Hey babe, that place looks great! Why not book a table for the weekend?' I loved the idea, shooed him away (gotta keep some surprise!), and headed in.

There, I meticulously instructed the staff: my sister would pre-decorate the table, champagne on standby. Smugly satisfied, I left—oblivious that he'd already coordinated everything. The restaurant knew I was 'booking' it, and the Portuguese spot? Canceled by him ages ago 😉.

The Strange Behavior

Two weeks prior, things got odd. He was MIA often, dodging with vague excuses. When home, he was distracted, glued to his phone. My instincts kicked in—not in a good way. I turned into a suspicious swan, while he dodged me nervously.

Reflecting now, I ignored countless hints, fixated instead on wild suspicions about his calls and texts. I got mad; he got happier (and jitterier). Turns out, he'd formally asked my father for my hand—a huge step, even though Dad adores him.

Curious how he popped the question and how I stayed so clueless? Catch my next blog for the full story on becoming officially engaged 😉 *beaming with joy*.
