Today is International Friends Day, a fun nod popularized by Facebook. While I typically tune out the daily hype—from Blue Tie Day to No-Makeup Day—true friendship deserves real reflection. It's a rare, cherished connection worth celebrating.
According to Wikipedia, friendship is a close, typically non-sexual relationship between two or more people, transcending gender. It thrives on trust and unconditional support, whether between men, women, or mixed groups. Friends are made through words, like kids asking 'Will you be my friend?' or simply through shared moments.
Friends offer unparalleled acceptance and help one another selflessly, often prioritizing each other's needs. This mutual care defines the bond.
From my own experience, I'd add: the freedom to share everything—a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a shared smile or tear. True friends stand by you, even unasked, with deep understanding and respect.

People drift in and out of our lives, but the ones who stay form unbreakable bonds—an instant click that endures. Some friends you see often; others, less so. Distance doesn't diminish the depth.
I've nurtured a 22-year friendship that began as teens dancing in a disco. We were inseparable until life—studies, relationships—pulled us apart. Yet, we reconnected effortlessly, our intuitive understanding intact. A single glance still says it all.
More recently, new friendships have become equally invaluable. They've supported me through tough times, showing up unexpectedly and selflessly. I'm profoundly grateful and nurture these treasures daily.
Friendships enrich life at every stage. I watch my children forge their own from playgroup and kindergarten—fiercely loyal, allowing them to be fully themselves, clashes and all.
With my friends, it's the same: a call, text, hug, coffee, pep talk, cry, or laugh. We support each other and our families, always thinking of one another.
I skip the viral Facebook videos or chain messages. Instead, I show my besties my love in quiet, meaningful ways. How blessed I feel to have you in my life.
