Everything started off perfectly. You were inseparable, with eyes only for your partner. Then, out of nowhere, they decided to leave—dumping you without warning, as casually as needing to use the restroom. Being left is never pleasant (unless you pushed them away). Some breakup reasons are easier to swallow than others. It might be a fade of love, which hurts but is understandable. Or distance making it unmanageable. But according to researchers at Cornell University, one reason stands out as the hardest to accept.
Drum roll... Being left for someone else tops the list as the most painful breakup scenario—and it makes intuitive sense. In a study published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology, researchers surveyed 600 people with various breakup situations to pinpoint the worst. The findings: "Being left for another person was the most hurtful scenario." "This may be because rejection promotes feelings of exclusion and in turn affects the sense of belonging." It also erodes self-trust overnight.
As we entered 2022, ghosting emerged as another excruciating form of breakup—vanishing without explanation feels like torture.
Note: Do not ghost!
