Where does infidelity truly start? It's a deeply personal question with answers as varied as the individuals asked—or none at all. A recent eDarling survey of 743 members underscores that infidelity is, above all, subjective.
We often equate cheating with sexual intercourse outside the relationship. Yet, there's typically a gradual path leading to physical intimacy.
Strikingly, 27% of French respondents view flirty text messages as the onset of infidelity. A close 22% pinpoint the first kiss as the crossing line—potentially unsettling for couples who share nightly passion. Notably, only 23% tie infidelity strictly to sex.
Emotional betrayal counts too: 14% consider fantasizing about another person as cheating, with the same share seeing falling in love as the tipping point.
53% of respondents rate sexual infidelity as more damaging than emotional (47%). Men lean stronger here at 57%, versus 51% of women.
This sparks debate: Does developing feelings for someone else already end the relationship? Can a physical encounter be a fleeting mistake without emotional weight?
