Eyes Don't Lie: Distinguishing Love from Desire Through Gaze

In dating, eyes often reveal more truth than words. Speech can be shaped to fit intentions—consider the confirmed bachelor who claims he's ready to settle down—but gaze patterns are instinctive and revealing.

A study from the Association for Psychological Science shows we can discern if someone imagines a long-term romance or a short-term fling by tracking their eyes.

Participants, both men and women, viewed photos of couples and opposite-sex singles. They quickly judged each image as evoking love or sexual desire while eye-tracking software captured their focus.

Results: Love drew attention to faces, whether couples or individuals, with little regard for bodies. Desire shifted focus primarily to bodies for both genders.

This matters because therapists could use similar eye-tracking to gauge how couples truly see each other, the researchers note.
