Parenting Payback: The Joy of Waking My Preteens at Noon

As parents of young children, this story offers real hope from my years of hands-on experience.

One day, your kids will sleep through the night—and handle their own needs without waking you. Even better? You'll be the one waking them up.

Trust me, as a mom who's been through the trenches, you'll love every minute of it.

Here's my recent story. It happened just a few days ago—January 2nd, a Monday, no less.

I braced myself for a chaotic day working from home with my two preteens underfoot (or practically in my armpits, given their size).

Lucky me, I've long enjoyed sleeping in. My kids are fiercely independent and learned early on that waking Mom too soon meant a grumpy day ahead (maybe that's the secret sauce?).

I rose around 9 a.m., surprised by the silence from their rooms. Parental instinct kicked in: Were they up to no good? A quick peek revealed total darkness—they were still out cold.

Perfect. I savored a leisurely breakfast and dove into work.

10 a.m. Nothing.

11 a.m. Still quiet.

11:30 a.m. Worry set in. Were they breathing? A stealthy check confirmed soft snores and steady breaths.

Noon arrived. Time for payback. I'd heard this milestone from other parents: "Wait till you vacuum them awake at noon as teens!"

And darn right, it was my turn.

I cranked up the noise—flung open the door between our spaces, unloaded the dishwasher with gusto, even unleashed the handheld Dyson for three measly crumbs.

Pure magic.

By 12:30 p.m., two dazed heads emerged: my darling preteens.

I almost missed them this morning!

Papacube nailed it:
