As language learning experts know, immersion through real-life practice is essential. A Babbel survey highlights a playful yet effective motivator: flirting. Among 1,000 respondents surveyed from July 6-9, 2014, 21% admitted to flirting with someone from another nationality specifically to learn their language.
This approach aligns with proven educational strategies like ludification—using games for learning—and the necessity of conversational practice. It's no surprise: 44% of respondents had flirted with a stranger, and 75% started knowing just a few words in that language. Remarkably, 89% reported significantly expanding their vocabulary afterward, often through compliments like "You're so beautiful" or "Qué guapo estás" ("You're so handsome" in Spanish).
For example, effective phrases included: "How long have you been surfing to get such an amazing body?"* (English), "Tiene hermosos ojos"** ("You have beautiful eyes" in Spanish), and "Estou louca por ti"*** ("I'm crazy about you" in Portuguese).
The most alluring languages? Italian topped the list at 47% due to its captivating accent, followed by Spanish (35%), English (33%), Russian (9%), and German (4%).
This lighthearted method proves that summer adventures can supercharge language skills—combining fun, practice, and genuine connections for lasting results.
