Domestic Violence Survivor Marries Paramedic Who Saved Her Life in Miraculous Love Story

A chance encounter amid tragedy can transform lives forever. In January 2012, Melissa Dohme, a young woman from Clearwater, Florida, barely survived after her husband stabbed her 32 times in the face, arms, neck, and shoulders. Paramedic Cameron Hill repeatedly revived her en route to the hospital. Against all odds, she recovered and reconnected with him two months later over lunch. Sparks flew, they began dating by the end of 2012, and their romance culminated in a heartfelt proposal on May 11, 2015, before a packed baseball stadium.

"It's thanks to him that my heart beats"

Post-recovery, Melissa Dohme channeled her experience into advocacy against domestic violence. During a baseball game where she represented an anti-violence organization, Cameron dashed onto the field with a baseball inscribed, "Will you marry me?" The beaming bride-to-be said yes. Their Florida wedding on March 4, 2017, drew 200 loved ones, including the six firefighters, paramedics, and doctors who saved her life. Fresh from her final facial reconstruction surgery, Melissa honored Cameron with a garter embroidered, “It’s thanks to him that my heart beats.”

Living and Loving After Violence

I wouldn’t relive my assault for the world, but I wouldn’t trade the life I lead today. […] It made me the strong woman I am now […] I know that God has saved me that night so that I can become the voice of those who suffer in silence, and of those who will never have the opportunity to speak again. I was able to meet Cameron, it was fate that brought us together,” she shared with Good Housekeeping. She added: “It is possible to live and love after violence.” An uplifting tale of resilience and hope.
