For our family vacations, we prioritize comfort and tranquility, steering clear of crowded beaches and traffic jams. We crave fresh mountain air, greenery, and easy access to active outings where the kids can burn off energy. This summer, after the Alps filled up, we chose Auvergne—and it was the perfect decision.
Here's why we loved it:

We started with a short stay in Puy-de-Dôme at the charming castle in Saint-Saturnin (they offer two family suites—highly recommended).

Must-Do Activities:
A guided family hike, "The Little World of Volcanoes," organized by the Aydat tourist office. Packed with fascinating volcano insights (even us adults learned plenty). They also run a fantastic nautical base nearby.
We tackled our first orienteering race as a family—super fun! No getting lost, though the kids grumbled en route. They emerged map-reading pros with compass skills intact (we doubled our time and missed two markers, but hey, progress!).

An archery introduction in the castle gardens, courtesy of the Saint-Saturnin tourist office—pure class. Everyone was hooked!

Pro tip: Pack sturdy hiking shoes (Decathlon kids' ones are top value for quality and durability).
Family thrill: Paintball. Our 11.5-year-old wasn't thrilled about the hits (teen drama), but we roared with laughter—I was all in!
Top Eats: L'Art Délices in Aubière for fresh, healthy twists on classics (no more steak-frites rut)—affordable excellence. Villa Regina pizzeria in Ceyrat is a winner too.
Next, northeast to Puy de Dôme's edge near Allier in Saint-Priest. We found a gem gîte on Château de Maulmont grounds: spacious (3 bedrooms, laundry with washer/dryer, travel cot, changing table). Owners stock essentials like detergent and spices—arrive stress-free. No pool on-site, but Vichy's aquatic center (15km away) has slides, jets, and a current channel (hilariously challenging).
The vast garden offers loungers and hammocks in serene paradise.

Blissful moments...
