Still Covering My Teen's School Books: A Mom's Annual Ritual and Dilemma

Remember covering school books from your childhood? I do, and thankfully, my son still loves it. For years, he's eagerly asked me to handle his. In the early days, I involved him to teach the skill, as every good parent should.

Book Covers: Are You Still Teaching Your Kids This Skill?

That's the big question. Recently, I shared a Facebook photo of the books I covered for my teenager. Dozens of parents—mostly moms—responded that they do the same. But is it really so bad to take this task off their hands?

I tried teaching my son early on, but with little success. Now, we've found a perfect division: I cover the books, and he secures the corners with masking tape for extra durability. It's efficient and leads to meaningful conversations around the table.

Am I Handling This Right?

This year, he asked again, sparking my usual doubts. Should I just do it? Insist he learns independently? Reintroduce the process? Let him manage school supplies entirely? Stick to our routine? Or handle it solo? I opted for the last.

For fun, I wrapped some in Sinterklaas paper 😉. He appreciated it, and his school friends raved about his 'funny mom.' Despite the hesitation, I'm glad I did it—it brings smiles to his teen face and keeps me on his mind daily at school.

Do you cover your kids' books, or make them do it themselves?
