"For the love of science...and a mother's love for her child" sums up this remarkable MRI scan from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Created not for a formal study or patient research, but out of pure curiosity, the image features Rebecca Saxe, a leading neuroscientist specializing in children's brain responses to stories, cradling her 2-month-old son, Percy.
"Looking at this image, some see the differences between our brains: his very thin skull, the tiny space between his brain and the outside world... A child is so fragile, his skull still just a thin shell," Saxe explains to Today.com. Yet, she adds, "you can also see the strong similarity between our two beings and how close we can be physically, with a single kiss."
This scan conveys a deeper message: "A mother and her child represent a powerful symbol of love, innocence, beauty, and fertility. Yet maternal values—and the woman who embodies them—can seem vulnerable, often contrasted with intellect, progress, and power. But I'm a neurobiologist who created this image, and a mom curled up here with my child," she shared with Smithsonian. It reminds us that we can embrace motherhood while maintaining our own identity, expertise, and passions—loving our children deeply all the while.
