The different types of retirement homes

In many cases, retirement ends up being combined with moving to a senior residence. And it remains to be seen now which type of establishment to choose. The possibilities today are diverse.

Ehpad

Do you no longer feel like staying alone at home because physically you are starting to struggle? Some specialized sites are there to help you understand the issue of retirement, of which the choice of a retirement home is unfortunately one. When people have to deal with a loss of physical autonomy preventing them from staying at home, then in this case, nursing homes (accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people) are the best suited.

Indeed, the particularity of these structures is that they are medicalized. More specifically, these establishments have a multidisciplinary medical team. This staff is generally made up of a general practitioner, a coordinating doctor who in most cases is a geriatrician, nurses and nursing auxiliaries. This nursing staff must be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide the daily medical care necessary for each resident, depending on their state of health. This is why it is important to find out about the efficiency and importance of this medical care before definitively selecting your Ehpad.

Otherwise, for visits to be possible, the geographical proximity of the places of residence of the members of the retiree's family also plays a very important role in the choice. The thing that should not be done is to settle for a single request with a single establishment. Public or private, do not hesitate to multiply the visits to compare the good quality/price ratio of the services offered.

Autonomy residences and service residences

And even if the future retiree is entirely independent, he may also have to leave his home once he is no longer working. The reasons for this decision can be many, such as isolation or fear of loneliness. Many then choose independent residences or service residences:

  • autonomy residences, formerly called home-housing, were created by decree at the beginning of 2016, with a social vocation that depends on the Departmental Councils. These medico-social establishments are particularly attractive for the services they offer on site.
  • serviced residences are managed by private commercial or associative structures but are not medico-social establishments.

The different types of retirement homes

Able to accommodate a single person or a couple, these structures are often located not far from public transport networks and local shops. The objective here is above all to facilitate the daily life of the residents. And still with this in mind, these residences also provide seniors with services such as cleaning or laundry. The apartments offered are generally studios, T1, T1 bis or T2. These private accommodations are organized around collective spaces such as dining and entertainment rooms.

However, seniors who have the means have a preference for serviced residences, which appear more luxurious. These retirement homes use exactly the same principles as residential accommodation. The building or the village often shelters a green space but also infrastructures for the leisure activities and for the practice of a sporting activity. Finally, if you need a home assistance service, these establishments also work in partnership with gardeners and housekeepers.
