Are there tax deductions for seniors in retirement homes?

One of your relatives lives in an EHPAD? Would you like to find out about the cost of these retirement homes? Be aware that to best budget the placement in independent residence, you must take into account the rates charged and the tax deductions to which you are entitled. Here's everything you need to know about it.

What is an EHPAD?

An EHPAD is an accommodation establishment for dependent elderly people. In this residence, approved by the prefecture, seniors benefit from many services for daily life but also from medical care if necessary. The living environment is pleasant. Residents live in a single or shared room, they can take meals together and even enjoy entertainment or even outings depending on their state of health. The families of seniors in EHPAD can of course visit their loved ones in their room and sometimes in furnished lounges. To get a place in an EHPAD, you have to apply.

How much does an EHPAD cost?

The EHPAD is not a free structure. You have to spend nearly €2,000 each month to live in these independent residences. The price of a placement in a retirement home includes:

  • accommodation in a single or shared room,
  • so-called hotel services,
  • catering,
  • maintenance (premises and linen),
  • the long-term care rate,
  • administrative,
  • the animations.

Of course, other services may be offered and therefore invoiced. Sometimes residents can pay extra for more personal space or personalized assistance.

Tax deductions for seniors in nursing homes

To cope with the high cost of nursing homes, residents can rely on tax deductions. The amounts taken into account to calculate this tax reduction are the expenses incurred in the year preceding that of the declaration. Among them, there are costs related to dependency such as support from health professionals and personal assistance (toiletries, meals, outings) and accommodation costs.

The tax reduction amounts to 25% of the sums paid for accommodation and dependency during the year. A ceiling is set at €10,000 per person in an EHPAD. The tax deduction cannot therefore exceed €2,500.

What about assists?

Seniors in retirement homes can benefit from aid. Among them are:

  • APA or personalized autonomy allowance,
  • the APL or Personalized Housing Allowance,
  • social assistance.

It is important to deduct the amount of aid received from expenses.

All you need to know about the tax credit for home-based employment

The tax credit for the employment of an employee at home allows seniors to have personal assistance and to stay at home as long as possible, making sure to choose their home help carefully. It amounts to 50% of the sums spent within the limit of €12,000 per year.

It is possible to combine the tax reduction in establishment with the tax credit for the employment of an employee at home. This is particularly the case if within a couple, one person is placed and the other is kept at home.

If you need advice, be aware that EHPADs can inform you about aid and the steps to benefit from it. Do not hesitate to ask them all your questions.
