Last weekend, our family set off on another adventure to the Opal Coast in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, following our Normandy trip. We aimed for land yachting on those iconic wide beaches from travel magazines, but insufficient wind dashed our plans. Still, we uncovered a stunning region new to us all.

Here are our top recommendations for an enjoyable family weekend in this area.
We fell in love with Un Matin dans les Bois, where we stayed Friday after the 3-hour-15-minute drive from Paris. These four guest rooms (including a separated parental suite) are tucked away at the end of a quiet lane amid woods on a 5-hectare property. It offers serenity, nature, comfort, elegant decor, exceptional breakfast, and welcoming hosts. Reviews across sites rave about it (kudos to Eza for the creativity). Rates start at €230 per night for four with breakfast. A shared equipped kitchen is available—ideal for multi-day stays and evening meals.

Just 15 minutes away, explore Montreuil-sur-Mer via a scenic ramparts walk (about an hour; baby carrier recommended over stroller). Grab a map at the tourist office after the Saturday market—ours was piled with local strawberries.

Heading west to the English Channel (not North Sea, as I once thought—the Strait of Dover separates them at just 33km), Berck offers kite sailing (weather-dependent via Éole Club) and bay walks at Authie Bay. At low tide, spot a delightful seal colony.

These seals were an absolute highlight—irresistibly cute! Contact Les Sentiers de la Baie for guided visits.

While Berck wasn't our favorite, northward we discovered beautiful Ambleteuse and Wissant (pronounced 'Wee-sahn'). Home to the essential Caps Gris-Nez and Blanc-Nez.

Sublime views even in overcast weather. We breathed deeply, ran on low-tide beaches, and spotted more seals at high tide. Family-friendly walks abound.

In Ambleteuse, we recommend Les Argousiers hotel (no family rooms, but cribs and high chairs available). Rooms overlook a lawn perfect for kids post-drive. Breakfast excels.
In Wissant, book thematic tours with Bénédicte Massart at 06 81 20 87 57. Her family-oriented village walks with games and insights last about an hour.

On the return, visit Nausicaá in Boulogne—Europe's largest aquarium. Among 1,600 species: massive sharks, giant sea turtles, penguins. Better than Paris's, with clear exhibits and good flow despite crowds. Skip pricey onsite food (€25.90/adult, €19.50/child 3+).
