Baluchonnage, also known as relaying, provides an innovative respite solution for the nearly 10 million family caregivers in France supporting elderly dependents. This approach allows the cared-for individual to stay safely at home. Here's what you need to know.
Developed in Quebec in 1999 by gerontology researcher and nurse Marie Gendron, baluchonnage is a registered trademark "le Baluchon d'Alzheimer®," requiring adherence to strict affiliation standards. In France, it's often called "relayage."
Baluchonnage entails a trained professional temporarily replacing the primary caregiver for an elderly person living at home, particularly those with Alzheimer's, enabling the caregiver vital rest or personal time.
The "baluchonneur" (or baluchonneuse)—typically a professional caregiver, home aide, or similar—is contracted through associations, specialized elder care organizations, or local communities. They provide round-the-clock support at the home for durations from hours to 10 days.
Duties mirror the caregiver's: meal prep, hygiene, outings, cleaning, and more. They do not deliver medical care like nursing or therapy.
Preparation includes an initial home visit with the caregiver to understand daily routines, habits, and support needs.
Caregivers gain essential breaks or time for themselves, fully replaced by a reliable professional.
The elderly benefit by remaining in their familiar home, preserving routines vital for physical and mental health. Typically, one consistent relayer stays up to 48 hours straight to minimize disruptions.
Established in Quebec, baluchonnage faces hurdles in France due to Labor Code rules limiting work to 13 consecutive hours. However, the 2018 ASV Law (Article 29) launched a three-year experiment with exceptions.
Limits include 6 consecutive days max per stay, 94 days per 12 months per relayer, and 11-hour rest (or equivalent compensatory). No night work caps or break rules block service.
Families cover costs of €110–€620 per day. APA or PCH benefits can offset some expenses, though sustainable funding is evolving.
